Past Tampa Bay Rays Season

The 2010 Tampa Bay Rays are in serious contention for the AL East sitting just 1-game out of first place. The team has gotten serious play out of pitcher David Price who has thrown 75 of his last 107 pitches for strikes and has won 16 games this season. 3B Evan Longoria has extended his team-leading RBI total to 89 and B.J. Upton has hit five home runs in the month of August, the most since his seven in 2007.

RHP Rafael Soriano became the first pitcher this season to reach the 40-save mark and just the 3rd in Tampa Bay history behind Robert Hernandez (42 in 1999) and Danys Baez (41 in 2005).

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays became members of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League in 1998.  Early on, the Devil Rays had trouble posting more than 70 wins in a season.  In 2007, Majority owner Stuart Sternberg changed his clubs image, changing the name to the Tampa Bay Rays and their primary colors to navy blue, Columbia blue and gold.

The changes must have brought some luck to the team because in 2008, the team posted its best record in franchise history in 2008 with a 97-65 outing and pushed through playoffs beating both the White Sox (AL Division) and the Red Sox (AL Championship) and made a strong run against the Philadelphia Phillies who took 5-games to take the Rays out.

The 2009 Tampa Bay Rays began their 12th season in Major Leagues AL East Division and look to get back to the World Series they lost in 2008 to the Philadelphia Phillies in 5 games.  The roster is pretty much intact from last season with the exception of free agents Eric Hinske, Rocco Baldelli, Cliff Floyd, Trevor Miller and Jonny Gomes.

The acquisition of former Phillies leftie Pat Burrell to a 2-year deal (worth $16 million) and Joe Nelson to a 1-year deal (worth $1.3 million) should help to solidify the pitching in their run to the Fall Classic.

As of this writing, the Rays are sitting in third place in the NL East with a 72-71 record with 25 games remaining and are fighting for a NL Wild Card spot.
